About the Position
Glatfelter Insurance Group is seeking an Underwriting Assistant Supervisor who will assume responsibility for the quality and quantity of work performed by the Underwriting Assistants and provide guidance, training and support to Underwriting Assistants on the team. This position supports the achievement of the department goals related to underwriting results, customer service and agent relations. Other main job functions include:
- Assists underwriter by entering data into the rating system for new business with respect to renewal business, codes, prices, and maintains account within the Underwriter Assistant guidelines.
- Refers to underwriter when necessary.
- Processes all customer service and system related transactions in assigned territory, including quotes, endorsements, and general questions.
This position is required to be onsite at our Leader Heights, York, PA office.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluates the performance of the Underwriting Assistants on an annual basis and conducts performance reviews and Audits.
- Organizes workflows and procedures, monitors activity and conducts meetings for staff.
- Responsible for performance evaluations and salary adjustments relative to all associates within area of responsibility.
- Sets goals and objectives for the department and evaluates results periodically with regard to their attainment. Works with each associate to set up personal goals and helps them attain their goals by monitoring and offering any helpful suggestions.
- Analyzes workflow and develops new procedures within an area which are cost effective.
- Organizes projects and delegates responsibilities to appropriate individuals.
- Performs individual as well as group training sessions concerning areas of responsibility.
- Processes and issues all automated transactions in assigned territory, including Portfolio, General Liability, Commercial Automobile, Management Liability, Inland Marine, Systems Breakdown, Crime, Property and Excess. This pertains to quotes, new business, endorsements, renewals, and rewrites.
- Assists with large account quoting/issuance.
- Acts as a mentor to Underwriting Assistants and trainees as needed, including serving as point person for UA questions other than systems problems addressed by Underwriting Operations.
- Prices renewal business and identifies valid reasons for schedule rating modifications in the file.
- Processes endorsement and change requests received from agent within written authority. Refers those that exceed authority to underwriter. Performs all quotes in systems for quote requests.
- Controls expiration lists for assigned territory. Assists in the updating and analysis of exposure information for renewal processing.
- Maintains all Onbase new customer files and renewal files with appropriate documentation in file.
- Maintains diary system according to guidelines.
- Maintains weekly reports measuring timeliness of agency processed transactions including issues, endorsements, renewals.
- Responsible for special projects as assigned.
- Performs other duties as required by management.
What We’re Looking For
- Graduation from high school with appropriate course work in English and math leading to proficiency in verbal and written communications skills.
- Minimum four (4) years property-casualty experience preferred or equivalent to industry experience.
- Is knowledgeable in basic manual rating.
- Is knowledgeable in the selection of coverage forms for all lines of business in assigned territory.
- Has proficient computer data-entry skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
- Proven exceptional performance as an underwriting assistant.
- Supervisory experience is desirable
- Ability to process on various software systems a heavy volume of detailed work requiring considerable concentration.
- Ability to function as a team leader and a team player
- Interpersonal skills are required to communicate and influence a wide variety of personalities in-house and outside the company including underwriting assistants, agents, Regional Directors, in-house associates and others. Interaction can be on a one to one basis or a group format.
- Mathematical ability required to double check rating of accounts when necessary.
- Analytical ability is required to exercise underwriting authority and make decisions.
- Verbal and grammatical ability required to understand agent requests and communicate actions to agents, Regional Directors and in-house personnel.
- Organizational skills and ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks and required to maintain consistent quality and quantity of work.
- Ability to function smoothly and work under pressure in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Accountability for actions taken on files within assigned territory.
